EMMA

Body Dysmorphia

  • Last year I went to New York with five of my friends during the Fashion Week. My friend Tiffany convinced us to go to several fashion events and at one of them we had the opportunity to meet Emma, a girl who was presenting her life story as an example to other people.

  • Emma went to New York to study fashion because she was completely obsessed with models and their lives. After a few months of studying and understanding how the fashion industry worked, Emma began to wonder if she had any qualifications to be a model. She started to get too obsessed with her body and how she thought it should be, having ended up not eating during executive hours to lose weight. Some co-workers noticed the difference in her daily habits and when they tried to help her, they realized that she suffered from Body Dysmorphia. This problem arises when we look in the mirror and don't see our body as it really is, but rather as we wouldn't want it to be.

  • Unlike most people who suffer from Body Dysmorphia, Emma accepted her situation very well. She was happy to know that her problem was treatable and that it was just a change her mind made to reality. Nowadays, Emma continues to study fashion while being accompanied by a psychotherapist and undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy.

  • I was so interested in hearing Emma's story that I thought there was no better idea than sharing it on my blog.

  • Keep updated to read more about others! :)
